One of the most rewarding aspects of being an artist has been nurturing creativity and teaching art lessons to students of all ages ranging from two years of age to seventy! I have taught private individual and private group lessons as well as university art courses. Private lessons can be taught in the comfort of the student's home, a third party location, or in my home studio located in Rancho Cucamonga, CA, whatever is most comfortable for the student and/or the parents.
Benefits of Non-School Art Instruction for Youth For Children, lessons tend to focus on fun activities that teach kids about basic artistic concepts related to color, shape & design while increasing an overall sense of spacial awareness, hand eye coordination and creative problem solving. Older kids are provided with complex projects and sophisticated materials to aid in becoming more proficient in the use of technically oriented artistic skills while also broadening their creative process and increasing their ability to problem solve . As a matter of fact, a ten-year nation-wide study conducted by Dr. Shirley Brice Heath of
Stanford University, revealed that children
who participated in non-school
arts-based programs were:
- 3 times more likely to win a school
attendance award.
- 4 times more likely to win academic awards.
- 4 times more likely to participate in a math
or science fair.
- 8 times more likely to achieve a community
service award.
- More likely to achieve higher SAT college
admission test scores by 56 points on average (How The Arts Benefit Student Achievement, pg. 9) if they've participated in
after-school arts study for more than 4 years.
Benefits of Art Instruction for Adults In most cases, adult students derive great satisfaction from learning long sought after artistic skills they once thought were out of reach. Many artistic skills simply need to be learned and practiced to gain sufficient proficiency. After two to three months of lessons a number of skills could be firmly in place, allowing the adult student to take them in whatever direction they desire. This provides a great sense of accomplishment and may even provide a new creative freedom in life. Length of Lessons Lessons are typically one hour each week for children or one to 1.5 hours one to two times a week for older youth and adults. Of course the length and number of sessions can be increased depending on the student's skill/interest.
